I felt much better swimming today...except that I was having trouble with my goggles. I did my warm-up with one eye closed. The strap to the goggles is getting old and stretchy, and I am hoping that it will hold out for a few more days so that I can get a new one when I go home this weekend. I only like a particular kind of strap.
My leaky goggles did take me back to my freshman year of college swimming. I got to do tons of double distance that year.. sometimes even when we had a meet on both friday and saturday. I loved it except that was the year that my goggles and/or swim cap never stayed on. Every time I would dive in, something would go wrong. I believe I swam a couple of 1000 yard races without goggles that year. That really sucks by the way.
It was always so disappointing when they would fall off because my times would be even slower than usual, and I wanted to do so well! I practiced so hard, and then it would happen again. Everyone always felt bad for me, and I always just felt stupid. I actually had trouble with my swim cap all throughout college, but not as bad as that first year. I could never figure out if my head is too small, too big, or just misshapen.
After one of my many races sans goggles that freshman year, one of my teammates Dustin said, "you know, I would have just stopped and put them back on." because you see they never totally fell off- that would have been too easy! They just filled up with water and stayed on my face so that I could never open my eyes. Dustin was right, I do not know why I didn't just stop and fix them or just pull them off. I was just trained that you don't stop- you keep going... even though, in this case, that probably didn't make much sense! hmm, oh to have had this wisdom 10 years ago!
