Head down. Swim straight. 16 strokes. Don't breathe into turn. Don't breathe off of wall. Body roll. Follow the black line. Bend arm. Hard into the turn and hard back out. Don't push off too deep. Streamline. Press out. Fingers together. Catch the water. Point your toes. Long and strong. Pull hard, and for goodness sakes... KICK! (even though kicking only delivers about 5-10% of the power to your stroke).
I used to tell my mom that's why I chose not to kick. It is simply an inefficient use of your energy if you are swimming 1000 or 1650 yard races- (mostly though it is just because I am a bad kicker)!
Anyway, too many things to think about! I found myself thinking about most of those today though. Since I am getting back into the pool, I am trying to start myself out with some good habits.
I do better though when I am not thinking while I am swimming. I prefer singing while I am swimming instead. I used to listen to Dave Matthews Band prior to my races. People though it was so weird because its not the kind of music that "pumps one up." I never really used music for that though. Anytime I got over-excited or tried to pump myself up to go fast, I usually went slower. Finally, my senior year I discovered that I do best when I am mellow before a race and if I can just sing a song in my head for a majority of the 1650 yards... When I just let myself flow through the water and I turned my brain off- my body would take over, and I would do better! When everything fell into place like that.. it was a great day- but for now, fundamentals are key. So, I have to keep my head down, fingers together, streamline off of the wall, etc, etc...
